Restoring Flood-Degraded Ecosystems.
Powered by Nature. Guided by Innovation.

FLOWSAFE is a research and innovation project funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme. We combine nature-based solutions with intelligent monitoring systems and data-driven analysis to restore flood-degraded ecosystems more effectively and sustainably.

Why Flowsafe

Challenge

Mixed Pollution

Floods don't carry one pollutant — they carry hundreds. Metals, microplastics, pharmaceuticals, PFAS, and pesticides mix into complex toxic cocktails that settle in sediments and persist for decades.

Scale

Over 60% of EU surface
waters and soils are already degraded. Each new flood event spreads contamination further, faster — and current remediation methods were not built for this scale or complexity.

No Easy Fix

Conventional remediation — dredging, capping, chemical treatment — is expensive, disruptive, and temporary. It removes pollutants without restoring ecosystems. Flood-affected sites demand something fundamentally different.

What is FLOWSAFE?

FLOWSAFE develops and validates innovative approaches to restoring flood-degraded ecosystems by combining nature-based solutions with intelligent monitoring, data-driven analysis, and decision-support tools. The project brings together 13 partners from 6 countries, with solutions being tested under real-world conditions in Spain, Poland, and Slovenia.
