UBU — University of Burgos

Home to the ICCRAM research institute, the University of Burgos specialises in plant biotechnology and environmental remediation. UBU leads the first phase of FLOWSAFE, developing phytoremediation strategies using native aquatic plants such as Iris pseudacorus and Typha angustifolia to remove complex mixtures of pollutants from flood-affected ecosystems.

LIMNOS — LIMNOS Company for Applied Ecology

A Slovenian ecological engineering company with hands-on experience in designing and deploying full-scale remediation systems, including constructed wetlands and floating islands. LIMNOS holds its own trademarks — LIMNOWET®, LIMNOTOP® and LIMNOSOLIDS® — and is the key partner responsible for engineering and building the physical FLOWSAFE remediation platform.

A Greek environmental ICT spin-off specialising in satellite-based monitoring, IoT sensor networks and geospatial decision-support systems. In FLOWSAFE, DREVEN integrates Earth Observation data from Sentinel-1/2 and Copernicus with ground-level measurements to produce contamination risk maps across the three case study regions.

An Austrian research institute applying complexity science and mathematical modelling to understand interconnected social and environmental systems. CSH develops the AI-enabled digital decision-support model at the heart of FLOWSAFE — a knowledge graph-based engine that recommends tailored remediation strategies and predicts contamination risks under future flood scenarios.

IVL — Swedish Environmental Research Institute

A leading Swedish applied research institute with deep expertise in Life Cycle Assessment, chemical risk assessment and socio-economic analysis. IVL leads all three impact assessment work packages in FLOWSAFE, evaluating the environmental, economic, social and health-safety performance of FLOWSAFE technologies across the project's full lifecycle.

INNOWO — Institute for Innovation and Responsible Development

A Polish institute specialising in circular economy, knowledge transfer and multi-stakeholder engagement. INNOWO coordinates all external communication and dissemination activities, manages intellectual property and commercialisation strategies for FLOWSAFE's nine key exploitable results, conducts economic assessments and leads the project's policy work — including co-creation workshops with flood-affected communities and policy recommendations at regional and EU level.

UVEG — Universitat de València

Home to the ICBIBE research institute and its Aquatic Ecology Group, the University of Valencia specialises in microbial ecology, environmental genomics and freshwater ecosystem assessment. UVEG leads the final validation phase of FLOWSAFE and coordinates the Spanish case study at Albufera Natural Park — a Ramsar-listed wetland devastated by the catastrophic October 2024 flash flood. The team has been conducting post-flood monitoring of over 240 organic pollutants since the disaster.

GOMSL — Global Omnium Environment

Part of the Global Omnium Group, one of Europe's leading water management companies with over 130 years of experience. GOMSL manages 308 wastewater treatment plants and water infrastructure serving more than 5 million people across 400+ municipalities. In FLOWSAFE, GOMSL operates the 33-hectare Tancat de Milia constructed wetland at Albufera Natural Park — the primary site for validating and scaling the FLOWSAFE platform under real-world conditions.

IUNG — Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation

A Polish state research institute focused on environmental protection, landscape management and the impact of pollutants on agricultural ecosystems. IUNG leads the implementation and validation of the FLOWSAFE platform in mesocosm systems across the three case studies, and is the lead partner for the Polish case study in the Kaczawa River basin — a mining-legacy area severely affected by the 2024 Storm Boris floods.

PWZLOT — Powiat Złotoryja

A regional public authority in south-western Poland comprising six municipalities and covering 575 km² with 40,000 residents. Located within a UNESCO Global Geopark, the Złotoryja County area was heavily impacted by the 2024 floods, which caused over €350 million in infrastructure damage. As the only local government directly in the FLOWSAFE consortium, PWZLOT ensures broad community engagement and provides access to flood-affected sites for project implementation.

JSI — Jožef Stefan Institute

Slovenia's leading research institute, working across fields from physics to biology. JSI's Colloid Biology Group has developed two proprietary platforms — iACME (high-throughput generation of over 10,000 unique microbial consortia through electrostatic aggregation) and LUME (microfluidics-based spatial engineering of microbial assemblages). These platforms allow FLOWSAFE to deploy precisely engineered native microbial communities for pollutant degradation in the field.

DRAVA — Water Management Company

A Slovenian state-owned water management company responsible for over 20% of Slovenia's river basins — more than 4,800 km² in the Drava and Adriatic systems — including Natura 2000 protected areas. DRAVA manages flood protection, river regulation, sediment management and ecological restoration. Having responded to the devastating 2023 Meža River floods and converted Laguna Ormož into a Ramsar wetland, DRAVA brings unique operational expertise to the FLOWSAFE project.
