Restoring ecosystems where it matters most

Floods can significantly alter ecosystems by degrading water quality, contaminating soils and sediments, disrupting habitats, and reducing biodiversity. FLOWSAFE pilot studies are carried out in carefully selected flood-affected areas across Europe, where innovative restoration approaches are tested under real environmental conditions.

By combining nature-based solutions, intelligent environmental monitoring and data-driven analysis, the project evaluates practical methods for restoring ecosystem health, improving resilience and supporting sustainable flood risk management.

Why These Areas Matter

Each pilot site represents a unique environmental challenge and provides valuable scientific evidence for developing restoration strategies that can be adapted and replicated in other flood-prone regions across Europe.

The pilot studies help researchers and stakeholders to:

  • assess the environmental impact of flooding,

  • evaluate restoration measures in real conditions,

  • monitor ecosystem recovery over time,

  • validate innovative restoration technologies,

  • support evidence-based environmental decision-making.

From Research to Real-World Impact

The knowledge generated through the pilot studies contributes to the development of scalable restoration solutions that strengthen ecosystem resilience, improve water quality and support long-term climate adaptation.
